“Such Charisma”: Christopher Nolan Praises “Consequential” Iron Man Casting for Robert Downey Jr.

One of the most important casting choices ever made in film history, in Christopher Nolan’s opinion, was selecting Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been praised by Christopher Nolan as “one of the most consequential casting decisions in movie history.”

During his appearance on The Late Show, the director lauded Downey, who is nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s film. He also discussed his casting decision. “With anybody you work with, with actors…you’re looking for some kind of connection emotionally, empathetically,” he stated. “You’re seeking altruism of some form. [Downey] has such an attitude of extraordinary kindness. It implies that he is ensuring that everyone is giving it their all and can contribute their best to a scene while he is in it with others. He’s assisting them in making sense of those feelings.”

The director of the Dark Knight Trilogy, who regarded Downey’s casting as one of the most important casting choices in history, had long desired to work with the actor on one of his films. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. That’s something I’ve always noticed in his work,” he said. “And his charm rivals that of Tony Stark. One of the most important casting choices in the history of the film industry was his choice to play Iron Man. I wished to provide him the chance to immerse himself in a role, in another person, the way that great performers adore him.”

In my professional life, there have been three instances where I have developed an intense fixation on the prospect of landing a gig. Chaplin was the first. Iron Man’s Tony Stark was the second,” claimed Downey. “And the third time, for Oppenheimer, I got the trifecta; you’re lucky if this occurs a few times. It was with Lewis Strauss. Being a bit of a Cold War nerd, I knew a little bit about my role. I have no idea why I’ve been fixated on it.”

On February 16, 2024, Nolan and Downey’s Oppenheimer will have its Peacock premiere.
